Santa Cruz Local Awarded $20k Prize From the Next Challenge for Media and Journalism
Santa Cruz Local announced on May 25, 2023 that they won the Future of News Award in the Next Challenge for Media and Journalism which comes with a $20,000 prize. The Next Challenge for Media and Journalism Awards Celebration is a competition that celebrates startups that are reinventing local media.
American Public Media Group (APMG) is a tax-exempt, nonprofit parent support organization that provides administrative, financial, and human resources services to its supported nonprofit organizations in the field of public media. The Next Challenge for Media and Journalism awards ceremony was held in St. Paul, Minnesota at the Glen Nelson Center at the American Public Media Group. Here's a video of the award presentation.
When asked about their thoughts on Santa Cruz Local, a judge from the panel shared that, "I'm impressed with [Santa Cruz Local’s] community-focused journalism and the clarity it brings to important issues to locals by locals. The content it is providing isn't one-dimensional. It's really attempting to cover the community in comprehensive and relevant ways."
