Blue Innovation: Waves'n See AI Detects Coastal Erosion

Coasts are more and more vulnerable to rapid events such as storms as well as long-term changes such as sea level rise and erosion. There is a huge need to understand the complex dynamics of these events at local scale to make enlightened decisions in terms of beach management or coastal infrastructure. Waves’n See develops a remote technology for local monitoring, based on coastal cameras, providing a comprehensive set of high frequency coastal parameters, such as shoreline monitoring, intertidal topography and wave parameters (height, period, direction).

  • 70% of sandy beaches worldwide are threatened by erosion

  • 60% of the world’s population are living in coastal areas.

Founded by two oceanographers in 2015, Waves’n See is a French startup that emerged from public research. They are pioneers in Europe in developing a high-frequency, operational coastal video monitoring technology. Utilizing cameras associated with digital images and oceanographic data processing algorithms, they collect a complete set of coastal parameters with WaveCams® to fit the specifics of each beach and coastal infrastructure issue.

Mission

To support coastal protection activities with an accurate understanding of hydro-sedimentary dynamics, through continuous monitoring of the surf zone and rapid events such as storms as well as long-term changes such as sea level rise and erosion.
