Cleared for Takeoff: Joby's Subsidiary, Avionyx is Growing in Costa Rica

Joby Aviation, known for its pioneering electric aircraft, has been making headlines with its ambitious plans to transform transportation. A crucial aspect of achieving this vision is ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability, and Joby has found a strong ally in its subsidiary, Avionyx.

The Birth of a Strategic Partnership

In May of 2022, Joby Aviation made a strategic move by acquiring Avionyx, a name synonymous with excellence in aerospace engineering services. This acquisition was a significant step for Joby, aimed at strengthening its capabilities in software verification, a critical component in the development of aircraft. Tom Ferrell, the Development Assurance Lead at Joby, expressed his confidence in this partnership, saying, "Acquiring Avionyx puts us in an excellent position to meet the regulatory requirements necessary for us to bring the Joby aircraft to market."

Established in 1989, with over 30 years of experience developing and testing avionics systems, for dozens of avionics manufacturers, using a variety of tools and methodologies has allowed Avionyx to learn from lessons over hundreds of projects, resulting in a software and firmware development process that is agile, scalable and cost effective.

A Glimpse into Avionyx's Facilities

To accommodate its rapid growth and the expanding software verification needs of both Joby Aviation and other customers, Avionyx has recently relocated to a larger office in Costa Rica, an office that can fit 220 employees. This new space includes a state-of-the-art software integration lab, allowing Avionyx to continue pushing the boundaries of the technology.

The Costa Rica location holds strategic importance for Avionyx. Situated in the US Central Time zone and just a short 3-5 hour flight from 10 major US cities, it enables Avionyx to provide on-site engineering services to customers throughout the United States efficiently. This proximity not only facilitates effective collaboration but also underscores Avionyx's commitment to meeting customer needs promptly.

A Bright Future Ahead

As Avionyx and Joby Aviation continue to collaborate and innovate, the eVTOL industry can expect to witness groundbreaking developments in urban air mobility. Avionyx is well-equipped to meet the software verification needs of Joby's ambitious aircraft program and beyond.
