Chris' Project Corner: An Empty Fridge, Full of Ideas

Within our city there lives an inventor. Somebody who embodies the spirit of innovation and who questions, experiments, and implements, finding technical solutions to challenges big and small. As digital technologies are rapidly improving our ability to collect, analyze, and apply data-driven insights, these new tools are ripe for unique applications.

Chris Miller, self-designated Rocket Scientist and founder of locally based Cloud Brigade thrives on solving problems that have not been solved before, or require a better solution than is currently available.

Chris is back with another innovative solution to an age old problem. The crisis of the empty fridge. The one forgotten purchase that offsets even the most strategically planned refrigeration arrangements. There is hope with “What’s in my Fridge.” Mobilizing his extensive expertise in applying Amazon Web Services (AWS) tools and software, the flawed fridge is a thing of the past. Applying Amazon Rekognition and AWS DeepLens, Chris is bringing the cool to cooling. Using DeepLens, your fridge is comprehensively captured, creating a digital representation of all your favorite food items. Then using the Custom Labels functionality within Rekognition, each product is uniquely labeled and characterized factoring into an overall model of the fridge and its all-important contents. This model can be trained over time, contributing to the ultimate goal of finding which products have been eaten and what needs to be bought.
