The 2023 LION Local Journalism Awards was presented by The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Carol Oppenheim & Jerome Lamet Charitable Fund. 36 independent news businesses were selected as winners. Each of the winners received at least $1,300 to further support their independent news business. As the winner of LION Business of the Year Santa Cruz Local received a $3,000 cash prize.
